Mallika Taneja (IN)
Do you know this song?
Based on a personal experience of loss, New Delhi-based artist Mallika Taneja embarks on a dive into her past. She encounters the voices of women around her who gave up their careers for their families; voices that were too quiet to be remembered. Their fates may seem individual and personal, but they reflect a systemic erasure and suppression of patriarchy: when they start a family, women disappear from the public eye into the private sphere and fall into a vortex of oblivion.
In her solo performance, the ‘unheard’ voices resound musically. Equipped with a harmonium and a microphone, Mallika Taneja gently guides us through the world of the women around her. Like lost love stories, the unrealised dreams are sung about and remembered. ‘Do You Know This Song?’ is a touching piece about social invisibility, about shared mourning as a collective practice and the comfort that comes from remembering.
