Capturing the classical topos of misdirected wishes, Wilhelm Hauff’s fairy tale tells the story of the discontent collier Peter Munk, who when granted three wishes, wishes for the wrong things and subsequently stumbles into misfortune. It is only when he realizes what is really important in life that his unfortunate fate turns.
