The girl Toda tells the story of her escape. There is a war raging in her home country – “one lot are fighting against the other lot”. Toda’s father is conscripted and learns how to become a bush in order to camouflage himself. Toda is to cross the border into the neighbouring country where her mother has been living for several years. On her journey to safety, Toda has many different adventures and meets various people along the way.
